From 1949-55, "Shoat" Webster dominated steer roping, winning four world championships and twice finishing runner-up. Webster also gained permanent possession of the Sam Jackson all-around cowboy trophy at the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up by winning it three times in a row (1949-51). Webster's colleagues on the professional rodeo circuit believe he could have won even more world titles had he traveled more. Webster's best known steer roping horse was a roan Hancock gelding named Popcorn. A direct descendant of a pioneer family, Webster, born Jan. 23, 1925, in Lenapah, Okla., did not go hard on the circuit much, instead putting his priorities on taking care of ranching interests. He was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1979.
